In central Lut in an area of 50 thousand hectares, sand dunes show off their greatness with heights up to 500 meters. There is a 120-day wind blowing from Sistan which takes the credit for creating the Kaluts and also for moderating the temperature between day and night. ![]() And Rud Shur dissolves softer ingredients of these structures in its salty water. The wind carries the sand and hits these structures and this, therefore, makes them so smooth. These uniquely marvelous structures are the result of 20 thousand years of erosion by two important factors, wind, and water. Kalut is a local word attributed to deep ditches and huge sand pyramids and is regarded as a unique phenomenon in the world. Erosion by wind, the river flows, and extreme temperature changes are the factors responsible for this especial face of the no-vegetation area. For this reason, they have named it paving desert. This area of the desert seems skillfully cobbled with small and big stones. Geomorphologically speaking we can notice three enormously quirky structures in the Lut desert that deserve a review The bigger proportion is located in Kerman province and a smaller proportion in the north of Sistan and Balochistan Province. South Lut has got the richest vegetation and civilization tracks in Lut Plain. Moreover is home to some scattered deserts of salt and gypsum. It is interesting that there are sedimentary and volcanic mountains and hills in the area and they cause earthquakes from time to time.Ĭentral Lut with 162 kilometers length and 52 kilometers width is also known as “Chaleh Lut”. Sounds totally reasonable since this ever-flowing river passes 200 kilometers through the salty lands of the desert. In fact, it is one of the saltiest rivers in the world. So as the name reveals the river is salty. The south part of the area ends with a river, “Rud Shur” in Birjand city. The elements and ups and downs of this area of Lut Plain are mainly gravel, and pebble. Northern Lut is located in Khorasan Province that’s the reason they call it “Khorasan Lut” also. Lut desert includes three geographical parts. According to experts the hottest spot in the desert is the Central Lute Hole, 75 kilometers away to the east of Shahdad city. Since the Lut desert is rich in iron and has a blackish surface, it absorbs and sustains a lot of sunlight. This image was acquired by Envisat’s MERIS instrument on 2 April 2012 and is also featured on the Earth from Space video programme.Have you ever heard about the hottest place in the world? It is right here in Iran with about 71 Centigrade degrees which have been recorded in 2009 by the satellites. Iran experiences frequent tectonic activity as several major fault lines cross the country. In the lower-left we can see the white, snow-capped Jebal Barez mountains.Ī major earthquake struck about 100 km east of the snow-caps in 2003, its epicentre near the ancient city of Bam (lower-central portion of image). But irrigation expansion combined with droughts have caused the water levels in these wetlands to drop significantly – and some years even dry up. With their arid surroundings, the wetlands in this border region have been a major source of food and fresh water for thousands of years, as well as an important stop for migratory birds. In the upper-right section we can see a light green, shallow body of water that straddles Iran’s border with Afghanistan. The darker area to the east is an extent of massive sand dunes, some reaching up to 300 m tall. The light area in the centre of the image are the long, parallel wind-carved ridges and furrows. The highest land surface temperature ever recorded was in the Lut Desert in 2005 at 70.7✬, as measured by NASA’s Aqua satellite. The desert is often called the ‘hottest place on Earth’ as satellites measured record surface temperatures there for several years. The Dasht-e Lut salt desert in southeast Iran is captured in this Envisat image. ![]()
